History of the NDAL Library

The establishment of the National Defence Academy of Latvia (NDAL) Library started in 1992 at the same time with the creation of the NDAL, with six people working at the Library.

The Head of the Library Laila Tīģere has run the Library since 1992. Together with Library employees Inese Vilistere, Anete Cēbere, Sanita Lovčinovska and Ulrika Rone, the foundations were laid for the creation and development of the Library.

According to the Law on Libraries, the NDAL Library is registered in the Latvian Library Register (No. BLBO0527) and is the only important library of the military sector in Latvia.

In October 1994, the NDAL Library participated in the founding of the Latvian Association of Academic Libraries (LATABA) and has since actively participated in the activities of LATABA.

Since 1999, the Library has been creating an electronic catalogue.

Since 2004, the Library was named the Military Information Bureau (MIB).

Since 2006, the NDAL Library has been a member of a virtual book catalogue ALICE. The catalogue offers a virtual catalogue of 11 Latvian institutions of higher education and special libraries, which is created in the library information system ALICE. 

In 2004, a renovation of the NDAL Library was launched with the financial support of the Royal Danish Military Academy in order to promote the development of the NDAL Library similar to the military libraries of other NATO countries.

The opening celebration of the new NDAL Library took place on October 5, 2005, with the participation of the NAF Commander, Rector of the Royal Danish Military Academy and other officials and guests.

Since 2007, the Library has three employees.

From March 7, 2008 to March 20, 2009, Laila Tīģere, Head of the NDAL Library, was elected the Chairman of the LATABA Board.

The original name Library has been restored since February 5, 2010.

On December 5, 2011, the Library received an accreditation certificate and a decision on the granting of local Library status.

NDAL Library was reaccredited in 2019.

In spring 2022, the Library moved to new facilities at the NDAL Wellbeing Centre – Ezermalas iela 6B, the opening ceremony of the Wellbeing Centre was held on May 13.
