Description of the NDAL flag, logo, motto, beret cockade, anthem
The NDAL flag is rectangular (198 cm long and 128 cm wide), the sides of which are clad on both sides of the flag with red and white red ribbon in the colours of the national flag. The outer edges of the flag are sewn in gold. The flag is attached to the flagpole with 11 gold-coloured metal rings. The flagpole is made of wood and is screwed from two parts. The flag tip is made of gold-coloured metal in the shape of a spear blade and contains the historic symbol of the Latvian army – “soldier's sun”.
The flag's averse is white. The centre depicts the small coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia. The shield of the State coat of arms shall be divided and half-divided: 1 - a side of a golden sun rising in a blue field, 2 - a red lion turned opposite in a silver field (Kurzeme, Zemgale), 3 - in a red field a silver griffin with a golden tongue and a silver sword in his right paw (Vidzeme, Latgale). Above the shield crescent, three gold stars symbolising the historic unity of Latvia's counties.
Behind the little national crest is a crossed silver sword (blade down) and a burning torch, the historic symbols of the Military School flag. Two green branches of oak cross under the sword and leaf. On the left-hand side of the little national coat of arms, the year number “1919” is the year of the foundation of the Military School. On the right hand side of the coat of arms of the small country, the number of years “1992” is the year of foundation of the NDAL.
The reverse of the flag is gold. The center features the NDAL coat of arms. The NDAL coat of arms is the historic Military School badge. A silver-rimmed carmine-red shield represents the protection of the homeland. The sword handle on the shield is made up of 11 twists, which represent November 11, 1919 - Lacplesis day. There are three golden stars on the sword's delicious. A hand has been placed on the blade of the sword with sworn fingers, which represents loyalty to the state and people of Latvia. Above the shield, a silver ribbon with the text “NAA 1992” in black letters, the year of the NAA's founding.
Under the NAA coat of arms is the NAA motto in silver "PER ASPERA AD ASTRA (through thorns on stars). Above the coat of arms of the NAA, in a semicircle, the inscription “NATIONAL DEFENCE ACADEMY of THE REPUBLIC of LATVIA” in carmine red.
Colors, symbols, and elements included in the NAA flag:
- Carmine red (PANTONE 1807C and PANTONE 201C), which the world also refers to as “Latvian red”. Color symbolizes the blood of soldiers donated to protect their homeland.
- White (PANTONE WHITE) represents faith and homeland love. Faith in moral values - all good, beautiful, clear, which ancient Latvians marked with the word white.
- Gold (PANTONE 873C) represents generosity and wealth.
- Silver (PANTONE 877C) represents truth and openness.
- Green (PANTONE 330 and PANTONE 336) represents hope, fertility and prosperity.
- Sword - weapon of a soldier. A symbol of power, righteous justice and courage. A gun that protects light from the forces of darkness.
- Burning torch – symbol of light and knowledge.
- Crossed branches of oak – a symbol of strength, firmness and longevity. The 18-leaf branches symbolize the proclamation day of an independent Latvian state - November 18, 1918.
The NDAL motto “Per aspera ad Astra” (Latin “through thorns to stars”) is inherited from the Latvian School of War (1919-1940).
