About the NDAL

The Latvian National Defense Academy was established on February 13, 1992 by the decision of the Council of Ministers of February 19, 1992 no. 54 as the Ministry of Defense Academy. The founder of the Academy is the state represented by the Cabinet of Ministers. The National Defense Academy operates in accordance with the Higher Education Law.

The National Defense Academy is a state institution of higher education and science of the Republic of Latvia, which achieves its operational goals by implementing professional study programmes and conducting scientific research in the military field. In matters of military service, the Academy is under the direct command of the Commander of the National Armed Forces.

The basic task of the Defense Academy is to prepare professionally educated commanders and military specialists for the defense of the Latvian state, to organize and conduct research in the field of national defense and security, to educate the young military intelligentsia, officers - patriots of Latvia, mentally and physically developed personalities with high morals, sense of honor and duty, leaders who are able to take responsibility and successfully lead their subordinates.

The main activities of the National Defence Academy of Latvia are:

1) Preparation of officers for service in the National Armed Forces;

2) Research in the military sector, which is necessary for improvement of the State defence and ensuring the operation of the National Defence Academy of Latvia;

3) Improvement and re-qualification of employees of the State defence system;

4) Preparation and publication of teaching methodologies, textbooks and scientific work.

Admission to studies at the National Defence Academy of Latvia is organized in accordance with selection procedures, on the basis of the requirements of the Law on Higher Education Institutions, Military Service Law and other binding regulatory enactments.
